CHAPTER NINETEEN

EVIE

“We have to go back!” I shouted, tears rolling down my cheeks. “Blake is still there!”

Zane collapsed in the snow, completely drained of energy.

“We can’t go back,” My father said. “I won’t risk your safety again.”

I growled, holding my wand so tightly that it might have snapped in my hand.

“I can’t believe you. Fine, if you won’t go back for Blake, go back for Lee!”

“Lee told us to go,” My father shot back.

“What about Blake?”

“That mage made his choice!” My father’s face was red with anger. “Just drop it, Evie. I’ll speak to the others before we decide what to do. We can’t just go running off fueled by emotions. It makes us weak.”

Before I could say another word, my father left. He walked up to Molly’s house, where he was met by my mother and a few others. I stared at them until the door closed.

“Damn it,” I sighed.

“It will be ok, Evie,” Knox said. “You know Blake, he’ll be fine.”

“Why did he shove us away?” I said softly, casting a warming spell to help Zane recover. The warmth created a bubble around us.

“I don’t know,” Knox sighed. “I guess he didn’t want Lee to face them alone.”

“My dad already doesn’t trust him. If something bad happens … I don’t think he’ll ever trust a mage again,” I said.

Knox met my eyes.

“I don’t give a fuck if he trusts me. I’m here for you, not him. I’ll stop the Sons of Hell, even if I have to face my own parents to do it. No one should kill in the name of magical research. No one.”

Zane slowly got to his feet.

“Come on, let’s get inside where we can talk.”

The three of us hung out in the basement to avoid the glares of the witches and warlocks who were meeting with my father.

“You know,” I said. “I thought I’d be happy when I found them, but now I’m not so sure.”

“What do you mean?” Knox asked.

“I thought they’d be welcoming and that I’d feel like I belonged. After everything I found out about their past, I was ready for a fresh start. It doesn’t feel like anything has changed, after all.”

I hugged my knees to my chest.

Zane, who was still pale, but slowly getting back his energy, spoke.

“Evie, I don’t mean to be harsh but, your dad hasn’t exactly been nice to you since we got here. I’m sorry if that’s because of us.”

The thought of my father hating the three men I loved made me furious.

“It can’t be that. He’s just hiding something like usual. I was an idiot to think they would accept me as their equal. I took the fall for them, and they’re playing the same old games.”

Knox nodded.

“It seems we all have parent problems.”

“At least yours aren’t killing people,” Zane said with a forced chuckle.

I rubbed my arms.

“I guess so,” I said. “But, let’s be honest, we’ve been here for a few days, and I have learned hardly anything about them.”

“But we learned you can do magic without a wand,” Zane said.
